Frequently Asked Questions
What is GPS & how does it work?
GPS means Global Positioning System. It is a network of 24 - 32 satellites in the immediate vicinity of the earth’s outer space orbit that transmit their positions on a constant basis to special receivers on earth. With this information the receiver is able to calculate its position within a few meters. This information is then uploaded automatically to a tracking server and the vehicle’s position displayed on street level digital maps or converted to format texts.
What does GPRS mean?
GPRS - General Packet Radio Service. General Packet Radio Service is a packet-switching technology that enables data transfers through cellular networks. It is used for mobile internet, MMS and other data communications. Informally GPRS is also called 2.5G.It is a high speed 'always on' data transfer link which is used to communicate locations and status information from a compatible device to a base station software. Because GPRS is charged out as a price per MB of data per month, GPRS can offer attractive cost savings to clients who have a requirement for higher frequencies of communications with their vehicles. . In theory the speed limit of GPRS is 115kbit/s, but in most networks it is around 35 Kbps.
Can the unit be fitted to any make of vehicle?
Absolutely.
A GPS tracker can be fitted into any vehicle, passenger or commercial. It can be fitted into anything from a light motor vehicle to a heavy goods vehicle, or a trailer. The unit can even be fitted to things like motorcycles, jet-ski’s, ATV’s and many other assets that may need to be tracked.
How extensive is the PrimeTrackNigeria tracking network?
Our tracking devices work with the local GSM SIM modules for the respective countries, in Nigeria principally with the Glo & MTN networks. This means that the coverage is extensive. In the event that your vehicle enters an area where there is no GSM coverage the unit stores all the GPS positions in memory and automatically uploads this info once the vehicle re-enters the coverage area. Our units have the ability to store up to 50,000 positions and events, which equates to several years of tracking information.
What happens when I sell my vehicle?
You have a choice between these two options:
- We can remove the unit and transfer it to your new vehicle. You will, however, be charged a service fee.
- You may leave the unit in the vehicle and the new owner may take over the contract. We will also give 1 month’s free service if you sign up for a new contract for your new vehicle.
Can I monitor my vehicle(s) using my mobile phone?
Yes, if your mobile phone is GPRS or 3G compatible and you have an Internet account you can view your vehicle(s) by connecting to our ‘Mobile’ site which is a simplified version of PrimeTrackOnline and will give you latest location, speed and a street map.
What do I need to install your system?
All you need is a PC and internet connection that’s all. No need for a fancy “base station” or other complex paraphernalia. You get a user name and a password with which to log on to our site and see your fleet wherever they are moving to/from anywhere in the world online and in realtime.
